Empathy in Action: Exploring the Challenges of Integration

On August — at Via Morgari 14 in Turin, KAMITE APS hosted a one-day workshop titled “The Challenges of Integration – Empathy in Action.” This session brought together migrants, refugees, and local community members to explore what it truly means to integrate into a new country — socially, professionally, and linguistically.

For five hours, 15 participants and 5 facilitators worked together using a design thinking approach to reflect on real-life obstacles such as language barriers, discrimination, and access to essential services. The workshop began with icebreakers and group activities designed to create a friendly, open space for dialogue.

Each group then created a short sketch to represent a specific integration challenge, using creativity and empathy to express lived experiences. The collective discussion that followed allowed participants to identify three key user needs and to propose practical ideas for possible solutions. One of these ideas was selected for future development and prototyping.

This workshop was not only an opportunity to share experiences but also to strengthen intercultural understanding and collaboration among communities in Turin. It marked the beginning of an ongoing series of workshops aimed at exploring different aspects of life as a migrant or newcomer.
